Cosmetic innovation is increasingly patent-gated. Signal peptides, specific botanical extracts, delivery systems, and even particular emulsifier combinations are protected by tens of thousands of active patent families across the EPO and global registries. Launching a new product without checking this landscape is a real commercial risk.

Every formula generated in COSMIC includes an automated patent scan. The scan submits the formula's identity (product type, key actives, notable ingredient combinations) to the EPO OPS and Lens.org APIs and returns the top matching patent families. Each hit shows the title, applicant, priority date, patent number, publication country, and an abstract preview.

The scan is a starting point — not legal advice — but it catches the obvious collisions. If you see a Procter & Gamble patent from 2019 covering your exact niacinamide-copper peptide combination, that is a conversation your IP team needs to have BEFORE the product hits shelves.
