Antimicrobial Protection

Microbial contamination is the leading cause of cosmetic product recalls worldwide. Challenge testing (USP <51>, ISO 11930) is essential before market launch, but running it on every formula iteration is expensive and time-consuming. COSMIC's Antimicrobial Protection module provides a predictive assessment of your formula's microbial defense — before you send a single sample to the microbiology lab.

The module works like a virtual antibiogram. For each common cosmetic-relevant microorganism — Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Aspergillus brasiliensis, and others — the system predicts the formula's log-reduction capability based on the preservative system, pH, water activity, and the known antimicrobial properties of each ingredient.

The result is an Antimicrobial Protection Index (API) score from 0 to 100, rating the overall antimicrobial shield. A score above 80 indicates excellent protection; below 50 signals a formula that is unlikely to pass challenge testing without modification. The module also identifies specific boosters — ingredients that could strengthen the antimicrobial defense without changing the formula's claim positioning.

The spectral analysis is visualized as a radar chart in both the web interface and the PDF report, making it easy for your formulation and quality teams to identify weak points in the microbial defense and address them before committing to expensive laboratory testing.
