Botanical Intelligence

Deep profiles for every plant extract in your formula

The world's plant chemistry, organized for formulation.

Plant extracts, essential oils, and algae derivatives are among the most valued — and most complex — ingredients in modern cosmetics. Each botanical carries hundreds of bioactive compounds, and understanding their skin interactions requires cross-referencing taxonomy, phytochemistry, clinical evidence, and formulation compatibility. COSMIC's Botanical Intelligence module does this automatically for every plant-derived ingredient in your formula.

When the platform identifies a botanical ingredient (by matching its INCI name against a curated database of plant species), it builds a complete profile: taxonomic classification (family, genus, species), plant part used (seed, leaf, root, flower, fruit), key bioactive compounds with their molecular structures, biological pathways they activate, and molecular targets on the skin. This data is sourced from the LOTUS database (222,000 natural product structures linked to 37,000 plant taxa) and the COCONUT database (738,000 natural product records).

For each botanical, the platform infers skin-relevant functions — anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, barrier repair, UV protection — based on the bioactive profile. It identifies potential synergies with other ingredients in the formula and flags known incompatibilities (for example, certain essential oils that are photosensitizing).

The Botanical Intelligence section in the formula report gives your marketing team the scientific backing they need for product claims, while giving your formulator the phytochemical context to make informed decisions about extract selection, concentration, and phase placement.
